Have you ever wanted to tell a story with embroidery?

This is your opportunity to create something personal and meaningful

For a long time, I wanted to create embroidery just for me—something different from my art pieces, something with deeper meaning, more like a journal where I could gather all my textile studies together, rather than letting them sit in a pile.

A place where I could give myself permission to create without being judged. So I started making mini textile studies, and I printed photos on fabric with my home printer. I found old photos from my grandma, and I had an idea.

I started to make a journal expressing stories and memories from childhood and reflecting on my life. This way, my daily practice of fiber art has more of a purpose—doing something for myself, where these small textile study pieces finally have a home to belong in.

I found old photos from the 40s where my grandma looks pregnant with her third baby, happy and enjoying a day on their farm. Then I realized this photo has so many stories behind it. It made me think about my maternal grandma when she was my age—or younger.

Another interesting thing happened: my Mom found my grandma’s silk thread, a very old white thread she used to sew. She was an expert seamstress and designer of clothes, so the thread you see on the right side of the journal is my grandma’s thread!

What we will do together

Over 7 weeks, we’ll go on a gentle journey of creating memories and stories through embroidery and fabric. Below, I’ll share how.

      In this workshop, you will:

  • Make your own hand-sewn textile journal from felt and fabric

  • Print your photos at home and incorporate them into your pages

  • Create layered and fun compositions mixing embroidery, fabric, and collage

  • Explore modern, playful textures with freestyle stitching

  • Combine bold, colorful threads while learning balance and composition

  • Experiment with small textile studies to play and practice freely

  • Stitch words and phrases from poems, books, or anything that inspires you

  • Draw inspiration from my journals, tips, and creative process

  • See works from other women artists for ideas and inspiration

  • Connect with a supportive community where you can share your process and get feedback

  • All along, we’ll focus on expression over technique, giving you permission to create freely and make something meaningful for yourself (or maybe a loved one).

Meet Katy, your teacher!

Katy Biele

Artist

I enjoy spreading the joy of making textile art and painting. My work has been exhibited internationally and is known for its vibrant use of color and rich textures. I work across embroidery, fiber art installations, and painting on paper and canvas, often mixing watercolors, acrylics, and inks. I’ve been teaching for over 10 years, leading in-person workshops around the world as well as online. Teaching is one of my greatest passions, and I especially love fostering creative communities where students can explore freely, play with color, and build confidence in their own creative process.

FAQ

  • What is the refund policy?

All sessions are recorded and accessible to watch later for 1 year, so you can watch at your own pace. Because of this, I’m unable to offer refunds.

  • I am a complete beginner can I still participate?

Yes! While a basic knowledge of stitching is helpful, this is an explorative course focused on creativity, memory, and storytelling so we are not focusing on structured stitches techniques.

  • I don't have a printer and I am unable to print the photos on fabric, can I still participate?

Yes! I had students before that they couldn't print the photos on fabric and it was ok. Some of them just work on the journal with collage. Others printed photos on thick paper and work with that and it was fine. ** Also I will be sharing etsy shops that they can print the photos for you!

  • I want to learn just stitches and techniques, do you think this workshop is for me?

No, not this course. This is not a classic embroidery workshop to learn stitches. As you've probably seen, my work is very explorative and freestyle so my main goal is process over tecnique.

  • What kind of printer do your recommend to print the photos?

Just the classic Inkjet home printer is great, that's what I use (and I have a cheap one). Also, I highly recommend the photos be printed in black & white.
